On propaganda, v.2

I already twitlong’ed about this once yesterday morning, but I felt time to revisit it. I already did my “big reveal” rigamarole, so let’s get to it.

A good fellow by the name Norman Davies who is a renowned historian, in his book ‘Europe: a History’ identified a few simple rules for the creation and dissemination of propaganda. I’ll humbly submit a synopsis for you, here:

They are as follows:

1. The rule of simplification: reducing all data to a simple confrontation between ‘Good and Bad’, ‘Friend and Foe’.

2. The rule of disfiguration: discrediting the opposition by crude smears and parodies.

3. The rule of transfusion: manipulating the consensus values of the target audience for one’s own ends.

4. The rule of unanimity: presenting one’s viewpoint as if it were the unanimous opinion of all right-thinking people: draining the doubting individual into agreement by the appeal of star-performers, by social pressure, and by ‘psychological contagion’.

5. The rule of orchestration: endlessly repeating the same messages in different variations and combinations.

Now, this is all ‘Gamergate 101’ stuff which everybody should know on some level, but let me break it down to be clear.

1. Never mind all the talk about journalistic integrity, ethics, corruption, the incestuous relationship between the gaming industry and gaming journalists. It’s a smoke screen for a misogynist hate campaign.

2. Anyone with a complaint about any of the above is a misogynist. A virginal, angry, lazy cishet white male crying havoc at the death of the exclusivity of his pet hobby. Or, because 4chan.

3. If it were really about corruption you’d be talking about X, Y, and Z, and corruption isn’t as big a problem as misogyny anyways.

4. Everybody who isn’t a misogynist hates gamers. We don’t want you in our hobby.Everybody but you hates threats, harassments, bigotry, and toxic behavior. Joss Whedon says so, so it must be true.

5. Run a shitload of articles about misogyny and gamers’ bigotry and behavior nonstop.

It’s propaganda, and the people who engage in it are propagandists. Let’s call it out on what it is.
